Local hiking trail - R9

This hiking trail takes you to four rememberance points of World War II in Osweiler and the surrounding area.

The local hiking trail R9 was inaugurated on May 1, 2014 in Osweiler. The creation of the trail commemorates 70 years since the liberation of most of Luxembourg, 70 years since the fighting in the east and north of the country, 70 years since the evacuation of the border villages, and 70 years since the Rundstedt Offensive, from December 16, 1944 to February 1945.

In autumn 1944, Luxembourg was almost entirely liberated from Nazi troops. However, when the advance of the Allied forces came to a halt at the Siegfried Line, Osweiler suddenly found itself once again on the front line. The hiking trail passes four sites in and around Osweiler that keep the memory of the Second World War alive: a plaque on the school building in honour of the American soldiers who repelled the Rundstedt Offensive in the Osweiler – Dickweiler area, the memorial “um Schänkebierg” dedicated to the American soldiers who liberated Osweiler on September 13, 1944, a monument in the “Grussebësch” forest in memory of the inhabitants of the villages along the war front who were evacuated in 1944, and a commemorative relief in the church for the ten men from Osweiler who died during the war – either in concentration camps, on the Eastern Front, or in Russian captivity following forced conscription into the Wehrmacht.
